JANE FISHER

Jane Fisher Profile.png

TEACHER. THEATRE-maker. Mentor.

I am an experienced educator, theatre-maker and leader. Although I began my teaching career with more time in the English classroom than the drama studio, I found myself being increasingly drawn into leadership - always driven by the feeling that I might be able to do a better job than someone else, and always with a sense of imposter syndrome, and a sense that my heart was longing for something else. Although I directed many schools plays and taught some drama in my earlier teaching years, I had never given this true calling of mine the chance it needed. After being IB Coordinator and Vice Principal, an incessant longing finally grew wings and I persuaded myself that this was my last chance to change tracks and pursue the arts and theatre teaching more wholeheartedly.

At the same time British School Jakarta were looking for someone with exceptional leadership skills to coax a team out of paralysing conflict and I was trusted with transforming their programme for Performing Arts. The transformation was almost instant: the most complex characters had decided to move on and the new team was desperate to succeed. It was maintaining the level of professional collegiality and high standards that I set in my first year that was actually more of a challenge. And keeping a team moving forward through numerous changes in senior leadership. But I am deeply proud of the work we created there: my own work, my students' work, and my team's work. Most of the work showcased here was created in those four years, except for some of the earlier productions at British School Manila and West island School, Hong Kong.

As the global pandemic of 2020 inspired/forced/allowed a sabbatical of sorts in Cape Town, I am now looking for my next challenge as a theatre-maker, teacher and leader.

TESTIMONIALS

Jane’s productions are simply spectacular! Her vast experience and incredible talent at direction and stage management ensured either the 750-seated Theatre or the 80-seated Theatre at the British School Jakarta were the perfect setting for a vast variety of productions. Her direction was always exemplary. She brought a level of professionalism, experience, dedication and sheer conviction, coupled with hard-work, that ensured all productions had outstanding acting; the perfect set designs, costumes, lighting, special effects and stage management; and the most organised stage crews I have ever seen!

As an outstanding teacher of theatre, I was impressed with Jane’s ability to get the best out of every one of her students. They always gained outstanding results in their IGCSE Drama or IB Theatre Studies. Jane’s excellent planning, schemes of work and bespoke resources all helped to ensure students gained the confidence to perform brilliantly.

Jane is uncompromising when it comes to theatre and she recognises the very important part that it plays in school life. She always works relentlessly to ensure drama lessons, activities and productions are always inspiring. Jane is also an expert in injecting life and joy into English Literature and PSHE lessons through the use of drama."

DEE SPACKMAN / HEAD OF SECONDARY / BRITISH SCHOOL JAKARTA

I can honestly say that her teaching is some of the very best that I have seen in my 25 years of teaching. The planning was meticulous, the engagement was phenomenal and the scaffolding put in place allowed students to devise some fascinating pieces of theatre on the highly topical theme of climate change in a 50 minute period - truly inspiring. Every student in the class was hooked into what they were doing and truly wanted to participate. There is no doubt that Jane is a highly skilled practitioner who gets the very best from students of all abilities through inspirational planning, charisma and developing a love of theatre in all who work with her.
